FYI, here's an update (resolution) to my problem...
I decided to try an upgrade to the new SXCE snv_90 build thinking maybe
some problems have been solved and... it works! There must have been
problems with b89 for upgrades, at least on my system. Three things were
different this time: 1) I moved a lot of application files (unrelated to
OpenSolaris) from the OS disk to another disk to reduce the amount of file
copying lucreate had to do, 2) The liveupgrade20 patch code in snv_90
propagated grub information across all BE's (I keep 3 BE's on my system),
and 3) After I created a new BE from my existing build 79, I tried booting
the new BE to make sure it worked okay without an upgrade (which it did).
