If by "the new installer" you mean the Caiman installer that comes with the Opensolaris 2008.05 release, someone else will have to answer the question. But if you're talking about the new root pool feature in the Solaris Express Community Edition (as of build 90), the answer is, sadly, no. You can clone and upgrade an existing boot environment using LiveUpgrade, but there are no provisions for doing an initial install into an existing pool. It would be a useful thing to have, but it fell below the line of what we could provide in this release.
As for you implementing such a thing yourself, the problem is that the legacy install software isn't open-source, so I don't know how it could get implemented outside of Sun.
