The decision was taken many years ago that on 64bit-capable
cpus, Solaris would boot in 64bit mode by default. You can
indeed change that on x64 now, if you want.

Can you articulate why the decision taken all those years
ago is wrong today?


Re your actual problem with installation, you've provided
barely any information which might help us help you. I find
it rather unlikely that your actual physical hard disk would
be the cause of your problem, but without any details about
your system as a whole, it's impossible to tell.

You might want to wander on over to the irc channel #opensolaris
on the freenode network, you can generally get good real-time
help there.
