I was able to solve my problem by setting the /var partition flags to "wm" (they were set to wu). A big thanks goes out to Nils Nieuwejaar for mentioning this in a previous post. Would it be possible to clarify this as part of the error message? This would allow folks to easily isolate and fix this isue.
