zfs boot is being integrated into the current installer (i.e., the "outdated" one, as you put it, and I would concur with that). It will be available to the OpenSolaris community in the fall time frame (probably around November). An early version of it, with JumpStart support only and many limitations (documented in the README file), is available at:
