Perhaps this has already been asked, but something that has been bugging
me for a while is the list of terminal types prompted for during
installation in text mode (yes, some of us _do_ still use text mode
installs... in particular when using a headless system... :-)
Here's the list as of b67:
1) ANSI Standard CRT
2) DEC VT52
3) DEC VT100
4) Heathkit 19
5) Lear Siegler ADM31
6) PC Console
7) Sun Command Tool
8) Sun Workstation
9) Televideo 910
10) Televideo 925
11) Wyse Model 50
12) X Terminal Emulator (xterms)
13) CDE Terminal Emulator (dtterm)
14) Other
Now, it occurs to me a few things:
Items 2, 4, 5, 9 10, and 11 are so ancient that I'd be very surprised if
anyone still used these with Solaris anymore. (Some of these terminals
are over 25 years old!) Yes, a couple of people may have emulations
still around, but the reality is that probably nearly everyone who uses
emulation can at least get by with vt100, and probably even ansi.
(vt100 emulations are still so prevalent that it doesn't make sense to
remove that one, IMO.)
Its not entirely clear to me that #7 is still needed... we haven't
shipped that (it was part of OpenWindows!) since Solaris 2.6, afaik.
I'd really like to see Xterm color added (xtermc) and there are probably
others who'd like to see gnome-terminal added.
Its possible that some of this can be consolidated. dtterm can probably
be covered by ansi, for example. I'm not sure why the PC console is
required these days.
I guess a simplified view might look like:
1) ANSI Standard CRT (also CDE Terminal Emulator, dtterm)
2) DEC VT 100
2) Sun Workstation
3) X Terminal Emulator (xterm)
4) X Terminal Emulator with Color (xtermc)
5) Other
Much simpler to choose from, I think. :-) Just food for thought.
