It's not the installer, it's a problem with the new direct booter 
locking up the system on a bad interaction with the Cardbus controller; 
CR 6460904, which is fixed in build 58.

The workaround is to add "exclude: pcic" to /etc/system, which requires 
some fancy work to regenerate a DVD; if you have a current Solaris 
installation you may be able to use Live Upgrade to upgrade instead.

Possibly your best bet is to wait for build 58, or use build 56.
