I don't agree.   When browsing with a file browser (like most non-cli  
users do), the files that start with . are ignored.  This makes it  
very difficult to select that directory to store a new font, for  
example.

Dotfiles work fine for Unix people.   It's the people that don't care  
to learn unix (sunray users for example) that benefit from not using  
dotfiles.

You should be able to ignore a single directory entry.

Regarding the 5 or 6 character limit -- that's a CLIism, and a  
personal preference.  When using a gui browser, the filename length  
makes little difference in the big picture.
