Sorry to hear this happened.  It shouldn't, obviously.

Had you attempted to change the partition layout on any of the previous 
installations?  Disk geometry is a very tricky area, and often different 
OS's will disagree, so you can easily end up with corruption.  Usually, 
if I have to make changes, I use tools from one of the already-installed 
OS's, on the likelihood that an OS is most likely to agree with itself 
in this respect.  What OS had you used to create the previous layout? 
If you'd done the previous layout with Ubuntu, you might try bringing up 
Knoppix or one of the other Linux rescue CD's and see if you can restore 
some sanity that way.

I'm not sure we can do much else to help you at this point, but please 
file a bug and include the fdisk output (and if you do have pre-upgrade 
layout data available, that would be helpful, too).
