The build 106 live CD, released earlier this week, includes a VESA option which may work for you, if you're willing to run a development build rather than the 2008.11 release. Otherwise, a similar workaround for older releases is documented in Stephen's blog entry: http://blogs.sun.com/sch/entry/indiana_vesa_if_you_need If that doesn't work, I'd suggest asking on xwin-discuss, where the X gurus hang out.
