Of the packages in OpenSolaris, most of the core packages are not built using spec files; the primary case where they are used is the desktop packages (GNOME and friends) provided by the desktop community (desktop-discuss at opensolaris.org is their mailing list). The packages in the pending and contrib repos also use spec files to a large extent, but for those you should go to the software porters community (sw-porters-discuss at opensolaris.org is their mailing list).
