Note that such a hang is generally the result of an interrupt conflict of sorts: a device which is initialized by the BIOS and generates interrupts on as vector shared with the device of which the attach appears to generate the hang. But rather than being the cause of the hang, what happens is that the interrupt gets unmasked and the just attached device gets repeatedly asked to service this interrupt which, of course, fails.
