/var/sadm/install/gz-only-packages is a Project Private file that contains the
names of
packages which are not to be propagated to non-global zones when the zones are
installed.
Packages end up "on the list" for a number of reasons:
1) Package was installed in the global zone using the -G option to
pkgadd(1M).
2) Package contains a request script and was added in the global zone.
3) Package's pkginfo(4) file contains the attribute
SUNW_PKG_THISZONE=true.
In the case the package is already installed, it sounds like pkgadd(1M) could
check this file
before requiring the user to add -G as an argument. I'm not aware of a bug
being opened on
this and I encourage you to file on at http://bugs.opensolaris.org/
