OK. So I rewrote /var/sadm/pkg so that the packages should get returned in size order, just to see what difference it makes to a zone install. And it does make a slight difference. Package installation time went from just over 6 minutes to just over 5; total disk writes fell from 6.5G to 4.1G. But it's still mangling the install order quite considerably. Unfortunately I don't think LU (I think zone creation calls lucreatezone) has been opened yet. Nor the main installer.
