OK I reinstalled grub using installgrub from the livecd and it got a bootable
system back. However as soon as I did anything with the zpool on the second
partition I needed again to reinstall grub.

Then I started to populate the filesystems from a backup archive and this
seemed to be corrupting things on the first ( Solaris ) partition as utilities
in /usr/sbin started not being found, giving an error message of "Bad exchange
descriptor" and now I have got the situation where executing some other
commands (eg du ) gives the error "I/O error" so the disk appears to be getting
more corrupted as I put things into the second zpool.
Now I know I have done all this before with opensolaris on a normal disk so I
assume all of this is due to the fact this is a solid state disk.
