I am sure that I am missing something obvious, but I am much more comfortable in the SPARC world than the Intel. I boot the install CD or DVD and it gets past GRUB and starts loading the kernel, then it panics and scrolls by so fast I can't see what it complains about. So I grab a video camera (Flip Ultra) and capture the screen. I have posted it here http://www.ilk.org/~ppk/solaris/ one is the interesting part of the boot and the other is a still of the initial fault screen. It is reporting a General Protection fault. The screen shot is from 10U8 but I assume OpenSolaris is doing the same, I just did not video record it in action. Hardware Config: SuperMicro 7045A-WTB system (reported to work in the HCL) ? ?http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/4U/7045/SYS-7045A-WT.cfm 2 x Intel 5405 2 GHz. quad core Xeon 4 x 2 GB DDR 2 667 ECC memory 2 x Seagate ES.2 250 GB SATA disks 4 x Seagate ES.2 1 TB SATA disks 1 x Nvidia GeForce 8400 video card (PCI) 1 x Pioneer DVD RW drive Software: Solaris 10U8 DVD -or- OpenSolaris 2009.06 auto-install CD Help! I'm in over my head in Intel land ... P.S. Interesting note, but I do not think it is related ... I can get the Solaris 10U8 DVD to get this far using the DVD drive, but the OpenSolaris CD hangs at the "Loading Stage 2" message, but if I swap in a Sony CD burner for the DVD drive, then it gets past GRUB and onto loading the kernel fine. I mention this for completeness just in case it is important. P.P.S. I have tried other OSes and was able to load XP Pro and Vista Business without this issue, so I don't think the hardware is bad, just mis-configured (BIOS setting I'm hoping).
