Hmm, start with a "verbose" kernel boot. In the GRUB menu, edit the menu entry and add options "-kv" at the end of the kernel$ line. Boot the modified entry. The -v option enables verbose kernel messages, and -k enables the kernel debugger (just in case that the system panics). Most likely the system still hangs during boot, but you should see a few more messages on the screen.
