Actually the maximum memory on these systems in 1GB.
You're right! Not sure where I got the idea 512 MB was the limit but
I'll try and upgrade one of the Ultra 5's.
If I remember correctly, the Ultra 5 limit of 512MB was if you had the
floppy drive or some other piece of hardware installed that blocked
access to the rest of the DIMM slots. I'm sure there's details online
somewhere.

I think that it is the power supply that gets in the way. The system
board is the same in the Ultra 5 and Ultra 10 (aside from the Ultra 5
CPU being slower). As such, if you can find an Ultra 10 case without
a system board you can move the Ultra 5 system board over to the Ultra
10 then populate the other DIMM slots.
Actually it's the floppy drive that gets in the way - it overlaps one end
of each of the 4 memory slots; the 128 MB DIMMs are short enough to fit
under the base of the floppy drive but the 256 MB DIMMs are taller and
can't be fitted under the drive. One solution would be to take the floppy
drive out altogther if it's not needed and the other solution would be to
move the floppy drive up to the empty bay above it (which I think was
meant for an optional PCMCIA slot?).
