These days Instiki is most certainly a Rails application. Rails documentation, books, tutorials, etc. are directly applicable.
Instiki used to use the ‘madeleine’ persistence engine. As of the 0.11.0 release, Instiki uses an ActiveRecord back-end, meaning that it is now a fairly traditional Rails application. i2 is the engine behind http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/, and is a separate codebase from Instiki.
