Why wouldn't a simple file url work? I'm pretty sure I've done that before - but I can't find a handy example on mine.

As far as I can tell, Instiki does not currently support that. I've worked on a similar issue with MediaWiki in the past and it can be difficult to work with IE and Firefox as they have slightly different ways of doing things.
