Hi,

I recently had my web host look into the possibility of installing Instiki
so that I can use the mathematics markup features. They replied that it is
not possible because Instiki requires /dev/null to have permissions of 777.

At first I thought they were making up a story because that seemed quite
crazy. But they contacted me again recently to follow up on it.

Apparently the reason they think they need /dev/null to have permissions of
777 is this page:

https://golem.ph.utexas.edu/wiki/instiki/show/CentOS

Can I ask:

1) Is that information correct?

2) Are you sure it shouldn't say 666? I in fact managed to install Instiki
on Ubuntu with /dev/null having only 666 permissions.

3) Why does /dev/null need execute permissions? Or am I missing something?

Needless to say, they cannot change the permissions of /dev/null on a
shared server.

Also, they are currently stuck with Ruby 1.8.7. They sent me a link to this
page:

http://golem.ph.utexas.edu/wiki/instiki/show/HomePage

which seems to claim that Ruby 1.8.7 is supported by Instiki. Is this
correct? I was unable to install it on Ubuntu without upgrading my version
of Ruby to >= 1.9.2.

Bill Hart.
