That's weird mate, maybe Dx 70 would do for it's the most basic, but I'd recommend you check other games like F.E.A.R., Condemned: Criminal Origins or Far Cry, to see if they crash, the fact it crashes when light and particle effects like sparks makes me think it's the driver.
Some say the Win7 7022 build allows full hardware acceleration with 915, so you may try updating... you never know what will work with this crappy chipset.
