That usually doesn't mean good things ^.^

I would try to do the following:

1. Try and see if its your HDD
Put your ear over wherever your HDD is placed in your laptop. If you
can't tell where the HDD is, or you can't verify the sound, take the
HDD out and start the laptop. If the sound is gone, then its your HDD.

2. If it is your HDD...
Then it might be showing the signs of death. Backup vital data and I
guess just continue living life :p (also recommended to buy a new HDD
before it dies)

3. If it isn't your HDD...
Then hmm...  not sure what you should do here. If its a mechanical
sound, then it has to do with some moving device in the laptop. Only
other device I can think of is either the disc drive or a fan. If its
more like a electronic beep, then it could be your mobo telling your
something. Try taking out ram sticks and see if it continues to beep.
