The Registry Value will change depending on the game. Here's what I do to test a game's graphics :
Open the game and set graphic settings to their lowest. Switch Screen Resolution to either 800x600 or 1024x768 ( Yes , it DOES really help ) Try the game If i see some tearing up on the screen or a lack of "fluidity" in the fps, THEN i go and turn the Software vertex on.
