Leave XP, Vista or 7 will give better performance. Unless there is a
way to emulate TnL on XP with Source Engine games that is...


But if leaving Xp is not an option, I would try first to update to SP3
(unless your on x64, then just get all updates avaliable). Then try
updating directx by the directxwebsetup tool. Next try SetFSB and OC
your PCI/PCIe/FSB buses to max (you may get strange effects though
like wifi cut outs, only temp until reboot).

Then do your usual OS management things like scandisk, defrag (with
anything other then the defrag that comes with windows), clean up
browser cache, use CCleaner, etc.
