That's source games for you, this would explain why I saw very little if any performance boost under any of my games with the value set to 1, I do remember setting them to different values such as 2,4,6 and onwards but it just caused issues for me (lol L4D crashed on mine and I had a weird shadow glitch in CS:S that was caused by it) so I didn't worry about it.
