Well first you detect the game with xfire so it knows its there. Then you open the game up and see if you have Xfire ingame. If you do, then check xfire_games.ini for that game you opened and see what the InGame Render flag is set to (DDraw, D3D, OGL are common).
Or after the games are detected, click the game in the list and see what the grayed out Render is down at the bottom right. Then check if Xfire ingame exists. If it doesn't then your using a different render then what Xfire is expecting (running Diablo 2 in D3D mode when Xfire said DDraw).
