Dx8 support in L4D is still a big mystery at the moment with no two people reporting the same results for activating it, infact it would appear that by looking through game files that DX8 support dosn't even exist by traditional means (the code valve usually uses isn't there). However I noticed a improvement in speed when I activated it (+7-8 FPS) but at the same time a few people don't. To force DX8 to start add the following line to the end of your shortcut destination line "- DX80" (without quotation marks after all), or you could try "- DX81" which may work to. Report back if you notice a diference.
