You mean turn an installation into a live cd? while that sounds a nice
idea, its for specific purposes, not for gaming and what not that most
might do. I've seen a few things about installing xp from usb, to usb,
and other gimmicks, but to tell the truth i still think the new things
windows 7 brought really make the upgrade worth. even vista with all
its flaws brought many advances, while not for gaming, for more
serious areas really moved windows forward. you could as easily, or
even easier, install a clean copy of windows 7, install all the
updates, and from there begin disabling/removing windows components as
well as tweaking services. Just by fooling around with this I managed
to constantly free 200MB of ram which are very very sweet.

Right now I'm seriously thinking about getting a 2GB dimm to replace
one of my 1GB ones, leaving me with 3GB. I would switch both 1GB's for
2GB but since my cpu is only x86 i might as well save the money since
i can only have 3GB usable, even with the nifty pae trick, as I
wouldn't want the extra overhead anyway. The only thing that concerns
me is if the flex memory technology (I know its flex something) will
really maintain the same dual channel performance with different sized
memory modules.
If only I could manage with my 2GB... :S
