The full redist is always the way to go. I never liked those web updaters, as they just add newer files without making the installed files integrity. Download the latest redist, install it, reboot the computer even if it says the components are ready to use, then save a copy of the full directx installer somewhere safe for any future issues you might have.
As far as I know, there are no changes in shared files that might cause such issues. You oughta try increasing your security software settings and running a full scan.
