Alien Swarm is a more updated source engine, surpassing orange box
engine and L4D1/2 engine. From what I can assume, it shares the same
issue as L4D with the world being bright and stuff (maybe fixable with
mat_fullbright 0)

But orange box games should have no problem, I heard you could run it
well with the dx level set to 8.1
