I haven't had a single component fail because of overclocking; only
HDDs died on me, every other component has never failed me yet -
although I've overclocked CPUs, RAMs and GPUs up to the limit they
would take...
So I think that the computer itself becomes obsolete (because of the
performance) long before you would see any hardware defects because of
the overcloking. But those are just my thoughts ;)

In short: Go for overclocking and don't think about the component life
time (it's long enough even when overclocked)
