Meh I slightly understood the first question, had to re-read the 2nd one a
few times though.

But HL2 non-steam works fine I hear in XP, might be a bit laggy at times
though, but should be bearable with DX7 + other tweaks.

The steam version of HL2 is on a newer source engine, and requires higher
system requirements, and if HL2 uses the same engine as L4D and Alien Swarm,
then you'll have a lighting glitch where everything appears bright (might be
fixable with mat_fullbright 0?)
