Yeah it should. It could try without opengl if you want. Just turn off
compositing for exp, You can run compiz or xcompmgr.
If you're using XFCE or KDE, you can just enable compositing in the
window manager options. Also, Cairo-Dock can emulate the transparency.
If you have a black background then you to enable the corresponding
option in the end of the «System» module.

Also a tip:
If the dock is running without OpenGL, try to reduce the number of
icons in the main dock, or try to reduce its size.
If the dock is running with OpenGL, try to disable it by launching the
dock with «cairo-dock -c».
