I've found a better (JavaScript-) workaround without a dummy property:

text: { return ((Controller === "undefined" || !Controller) ? "" :
Controller.triedSteps) }

But still: Why has the behavior been (apparently) changed at all in the
first place? Or is it a bug after all?
