MacPing has a known problem with executing DNS-HINFO queries when they are disabled on the server. It's possible to configure MacPing so it never does HINFO queries. To do this, use an application like ResEdit to add an empty 'NoHI' resource to MacPing with ID=256.

That will definitely speed things up for you.
