This has definitely come up before… I also have the problem that link reporting, as it is now, is not completely adequate.
For those who are ready in their next email to suggest that setting levels for discards and errors ‘fixes’ the problem with using alarms, I suggest you think again.
Even if you set thresholds high enough to keep the alarms for down links only – not something that I am in favor of – you still won’t know if a link comes UP unless you choose to get pages on the “OK”s and that a real bummer! You’ll get OK’s after warnings and alarms and UP’s. You end up flooded with notifications.
So Bill, Rich, Tex, Chris … how about it? Why not parse the error messages and note a “link Down” for special treatment. That would include special paging and notification rules and looking for a OK for that device when the link down is received and then special notification and paging when the OK is received. That way we can set threshold where we really need them as well. ALSO we would need a rule for which devices get this treatment and which do not. LAN switches and modem banks need their link DOWN statuses ignored most often.

Yes, that would be great!
