To our InterMapper Customers: --- Ed Konowal wrote: I just saw it. InterMapper available for Windows.
Recall back in 2000 when you (Bill Fisher, Rich Brown and Dartmouth College) decided to "spin InterMapper out as a separate company"? My stated concern at that time was that you'd loose focus on the Mac and divert resources to develop a Windows version. I expected it. I HATE it, but I expected it. What's next? Sell the program to Microsoft? It's all about profit now. I understand... I'm just so disappointed to actually see the first steps, of this fantastic program, now headed toward mediocrity. A very, very sad day. --- end of quote --- I knew that we would get this reaction when we announced our cross platform version, and I thank Ed for stating it so clearly. Of course, you're right. This *is* a business decision. By any measure, the Macintosh is a minority platform. And in order to fund the developments that we all want to see in the program, Dartware must increase the market we can sell to. That's why we have chosen to make it a cross-platform program that works equally well on Macintosh, Windows and Unix/Linux. The Windows version is available now; RedHat, FreeBSD, and Solaris x86 are in testing. We'll roll out Solaris SPARC soon, as well as other Unix/Linux distributions as we get requests from customers. And please don't worry about our plans for the Macintosh. The same source code compiles every version: from the Mac Classic version, MacOS X, Windows NT/2000/XP, and the Linux/Unix versions. I should also note that creating this cross-platform version has made InterMapper more robust - it helped us find many intriguing bugs that were latent in the Mac source code base. Finally, we edit all the source files using a Mac, and we have *no* plans to change that anytime soon. We expect to maintain feature parity between all these versions for the forseeable future. Our recommendation is to keep up your support subscription for InterMapper and InterMapper Remote. You'll automatically get the new features as we release them. Please get back to me, either on this list or off-line, if you want to discuss this more. Thanks again!
