I think it's important to keep one thing in mind here:
ALWAYS use the Right tool for the job you are doing!
If your management tells you that 'mainstream' should dictate what tool to use to get the job done, I would QUIT right away!
It's your network to look after, and if you think you do it best with <insert tool> on <insert platform>, then that should be used.
Period!
