Folks:

We've been working hard on a new release of InterMapper. Today, we're rolling
out InterMapper 4.1b2. Our plan is to create a couple more beta-test versions,
then ship a final release.

You can download the current beta-test version from this URL:

        http://www.intermapper.com/binaries/beta.html

Please try out this new version and let us know what you think!

================================
InterMapper 4.1 has the following new features:

a) Strip Charts give you a historical view of the network performance. They work
much like the strip charts in the current "traditional" MacOS versions: tear off
a popup status window and click on an underlined value to create a new strip
chart. You can also drag values from status windows to add them to strip
charts.

b) Command-line probes allow users to create their own programs (written in C,
Perl, etc.) that test some kind of networked device and respond with a status.
InterMapper will invoke these user-written programs and reflect the device's
state on the map based on the information the program returns. Documentation for
the Command Line Probe is at this page:
        http://www.intermapper.com/immanual/appxb/commandline.html

c) Nagios plugins are a special case of command-line probes. Nagios is a popular
open-source monitoring program that runs external programs ("plugins") to test
networked devices. You can learn more about Nagios from http://www.nagios.org.
Read more about Nagios plugins at this page:
        http://www.intermapper.com/immanual/appxb/nagios.html

d) Command-line Notifiers let you to create programs to perform a notification
function beyond InterMapper's built-in sounds, paging, and e-mail. These might
include programs that issue commands to reboot a hung server, send instant
messages, process SNMP traps, etc. Command-line notifiers are documented at:
        http://www.intermapper.com/immanual/chapter3/commandline.html and
        http://www.intermapper.com/immanual/chapter3/clexample.html

e) Host Resources probe. InterMapper can now monitor several important variables
regarding CPU, disk, and memory utilization of computers and workstations that
support the Host Resources MIB. This allows people to track how busy their
critical servers are, or how much memory or disk space is left.

f) InterMapper can act as a Big Brother Server. Big Brother is a popular network
monitoring package that has its own set of user-developed programs.
Administrators can install these programs ("Big Brother Clients") on their
systems to report back to a Big Brother server (e.g. InterMapper). As with
Nagios, there's a big community of people creating Big Brother scripts that will
work nicely with InterMapper. You can learn more about Big Brother and its
clients from http://www.bb4.com. There are also many pre-written clients at the
Big Brother FTP archive, at http://www.deadcat.net/ Documentation for
InterMapper's Big Brother probe is at:
        http://www.intermapper.com/immanual/appxb/bigbrother.html

g) Separate tabs for the Web, Remote, Telnet server information in the Server
Settings window.

h) The Certificates pane in the Server Settings makes it easier to create and
install signed certificates for the SSL encryption. The certificate will be used
for all encrypted connections.

i) Pasting "traceroute" output into the Add devices window will add the IP
address of all the devices in the list. InterMapper will ignore hop counts,
times, and other irrelevant information in the pasted text.

j) You can change the notifiers for a number of devices at one time with a
single window.

k) There's a green/yellow/orange/red status icon for each map in the InterMapper
Servers/Console window. This indicates the most serious condition on the map.

l) Cmd/Ctl-clicking on a link allows you to set its link speed.

m) You can now set device and traffic thresholds for a device.

n) Drawing the ants is *much* faster for Windows 2K & XP. The processor
utilization is dramatically lower on this new version.
