OK maybe I'm missing something, but we do redirect output to a file and
still find the problem with telnet exists.

If you have specific info on Debian installs, let's take this off-line.

Just redirect TCPDUMP's output to a file. Then it won't chew up your 
telnet session and you can browse it at your leisure.
