I just ran into something I hadn't noticed before.

I was trying to add a number of devices to a map using DNS names. On
one of them I got the very alarming error message "None of the known
name servers are responding".

I immediately did some investigating and discovered that the name
servers were correctly specified in IM's preferences, and that the name
servers were working correctly.

A bit more investigation into the problem showed that the name I was
trying to add to the map wasn't in the DNS yet. Apparently that error
message means "That address is not in the DNS database", not "Your DNS
servers are down". It might be nice if Dartware reworded that
particular error message :)

Although I'm glad my DNS servers aren't down, I'm still disappointed I
can't add these not-yet-in-DNS names to an InterMapper map. I even
tried to copy and paste a good one and then edit the name, but I still
got the scary error message.

For those of you wondering why the heck I want to add bad DNS names to
my InterMapper maps, it's to track workstations that get their addresses
through DHCP and then update their NetBIOS name into dynamic DNS.

Later,

Doug
