I'm not sure about the bridging like you are talking about...
However there is the ability to subscribe to a particular forum such
that whenever anyone posts in that forum you are notified (with a
variety of digest modes and such). You can also subscribe to topics
of interest. There are ways to have a link in a forum to archives...
I also prefer mailing lists for this kind of thing, but have
experience with forums for other things.

I agree with Jason. I tend to prefer mailing lists, even though I
subscribe to too many. :)
Is there forum software out there that can "bridge" one particular
forum topic with an existing mailing list? This "moderated" forum
topic would contain only the traffic on the mailing list (ie like
the existing InterMapper-Talk archive).
