I would really like to see an averaging feature made part of the

When you look at a long period of time like a month or a year it is
hard
to get a real sense as to what the average utilization was. It
would be
nice if there was a line that represented the average over time
that was
visible in the charts. Currently you only see the peaks of the load
which isn't really an accurate representation. Would this be a
possibility?

After many years of network management on large and small networks, I
only look at the peak utilization as best I can get it. All routers
and therefore InterMapper only report an average utilization over
some period of time. If the time span is short enough then it is
usable, but not ideal. To understand why I never look at long term
averages consider the following. Create a chart where average the
usage over a 24 hour periodh. What you will see on this hypothetical
graph would be a smooth curve that went up to about 33% on Monday,
stayed relatively constant until Friday then drop off to almost
nothing on the week ends. The actual data behind this graph could
well be that the link was completely overloaded from 8:00 AM until
5:00PM every work day with millions of dropped packets and absolutely
terrible service but the lack of utilization at other times makes the
average look like everything is perfectly OK.
In my experience if you use 1 - 2 minute averages like Intermapper
produces when you choose a 1 or 2 minute reporting interval you
should start requesting more bandwidth when the chart reaches 50%
utilization and expedite the order when the utilization reaches 80%.
With those action points I seemed to get the new bandwidth installed
just as the router starts loosing packets in significant numbers.
Of course our order times thus your results may vary.
