You cannot use a Basic acknowledgment on devices that are in the OK
or UNKNOWN states, or if the device is already in Indefinite or Timed
acknowledgment.
(2) is it normal that the Unacknowledge item of the Monitor menu is
available (not greyed out), even when a device has no
acknowledgement active ?
Strangely, when several devices are selected, and none of them has
an acknowledgement active, then the menu item is NOT available...
The Unacknowledge menuitem will be enabled whenever the selection
contains any device that does not have a double-click URL that is not
a Map Status device*. The introduction of alarm-points and the
ability to ack/unack them in 4.2 complicated matters and added the
following conditions. If a single device is selected, then the
menuitem will always be enabled because the device may contain alarm-
points that are acknowledged. If multiple devices are selected, then
at least one of the devices must be acknowledged (ignoring any
possible alarm points they may contain - you can only ack/unack alarm-
points for a single device at a time).

*If the global or Map Device List is open, then the client uses the
probe type to determine if a Device is a Map Status device.
Otherwise, it uses the double-click URL - if the URL starts with
"intermapper://" then it is assumed to be a Map Status device.
