I don't really have strong feelings either way & I see a lot of value and utility on both sides.

If the inheritance feature were implemented I would probably be in the "override & turn off the inheritance" camp since I prefer to explicitly propagate my changes (and enabling/disabling a notifier on "all existing devices" map-wide or server-wide is pretty easy in Remote, which covers pretty much all of my cases at the moment :)

So if I understood you correctly, what IM has right now is better for thousands of hosts then inheritance that can be overridden from the top if needed? Like I said, M$ Windows security permissions model should be taking as and example for the inheritance of notifiers. It allows for exceptions when needed and allows one to override all the exceptions if it got 'hairy'

The inheritance thing can get hairy fast -- It sounds innocent enough
until you hit an environment with thousands of devices and the
exceptions start piling up.

None of that means the idea is a bad one, but it should probably come
with a kill switch (an "apply to all existing devices" checkbox in new
notifiers might fit about half the bill. For flexibility an "Apply
(or remove) notifier by (perl-compatible) regex" feature would be
*REALLY* nice and probably covers almost all cases, but now I'm just
being annoying and difficult :-)

It would be nice if devices that have not broken inheritance from
the default notifiers (be they map or server-wide) were updated when
one is changed. From my understanding of the documentation only
devices created after the notifier change will receive the new
settings and existing devices remain unchanged.
