Tex, thank you for the explanation.  Yes, the entire box was unresponsive, both 
locally and remotely.  No, we didn't have the Java client running.

Oh well, it will remain a mystery for now.  I'll continue to lobby for a newer, 
better box.  That Xserve has already had a full life.

The boss wants me to virtualize it on one of the blade systems, but then we 
lose the ability to keep it running when nothing else is!

The bug in Apple's Java code only affected sounds and only affected  
the Java client.  When 'the sound subsystem' hung, the Java  
application would no longer play any sounds (it was stuck waiting for  
a sound to finish before starting a new one).  We don't have any  
reason to believe that it would cause a hard freeze of the entire OS.

When you say 'it had hung', you mean the OS running the InterMapper  
server became unresponsive?  It sounds like you did not have the Java  
InterMapper client running locally on that machine, so this bug could  
not have had any effect on it.
