We had a couple other reports of font problems when upgrading to 10.6. It seems to manifest itself as a status window full of "hieroglyphics" as you called them. Unfortunately, I do not have step-by-step instructions to fix the problem, but both users who previously reported this were able to use Font Book to remove some duplicate Courier fonts.
