1) WMI probes only work correctly against Windows Server 2003/2008
servers if the NT services account listed in the Intermapper server
is in the target machine's Administrator group.
The account entered in the NT Credentials setting on InterMapper
server is used to execute the script used by the probe. The user/
password entered in the probe's parameters are the ones used by WMI
(DCOM, actually) and are validated by the target host.
2) Command Line debug output in Intermapper shows the user name and
password for WMI probes are being passed in the clear.
The username and password are passed as arguments to the probe's
script. DCOM handles them from there.
3)There are no clear instructions on the Firewall port rules
required to allow WMI probes to pass through successfully on a
Windows Server 2003/2008 target machine. I was able to piece this
out but it took way too long, there should be crystal clear
instructions regarding this so that additional ports are NOT opened
that are unnecessary.
WMI is typical of Microsoft technologies; there is no single procedure
that will work for every situation. We will be working on a tech note
to help with many of the common WMI problems. Meanwhile, this
Microsoft article might be of help: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875605
