So are you saying that Cisco - Process and Memory probe actually gets serials 
even though it does not display them and just drops them into IMDB? Or I would 
have to write a probe for every kind of switch and router I have to use instead 
of the stock probe?

The export utility isn't related to the probe type, so that part doesn't 
matter, although there is a probe for getting serial numbers off of some Cisco 
devices in addition to all the regular stuff.  Cisco isn't always consistent 
with their OID implementation.
When you export, you can choose what devices or all devices.  And there is a 
long list of parameters to choose from that you can export about devices, 
including name, S/N, IOS, etc.
It is very useful for inventory and couldn't be easier.  By default it exports 
as .TAB, so needs to be changed to .XLS to open in Excel or Numbers.
